TIPPING BY THE GALLON’S
From a single used truck in 2003, Ullenhall (Solihull) based Gallon’s Haulage & Plant Hire now boasts a fleet of five muckaway tippers, all eight leggers, the latest to join the line up being the company’s first new truck…. a Hino from Hi -Trucks (Birmingham).
So pleased is the company with it, they have already ordered a second for delivery in August - this one as a replacement and to be fitted with an HMF grab and all steel Abba Commercials body to Gallon’s spec.
According to John Gallon - along with brother Andy co-proprietor of the firm, the new Hino has ‘freed up’ considerably since new and is performing better than either of them might have expected at this stage or as the demo vehicle might have had them believe.
The Hino is already top of the fleet on fuel economy. And the brothers reckon further improvements are in prospect as the vehicle mileage builds and the driveline sheds the last of any tightness. For sure they are both happy with the 19.5tonne payload at 32tonnes. Both reckon its pretty good for an eight wheeler with a heavy duty steel body.
The cab comes in for praise, too. According to John, ‘its spacious, its quiet, its a nice place to work.’
However, as any operator will agree, all else apart, the acid test for any truck is ‘can it make money’. John will tell you that the Hino certainly can and certainly does!
